Ovi Share is dead

Long live Ovi Share . . .



Originally Twango, it was bought by Nokia and became Ovi. For about two years it was the repository of most of my recordings old and new. Songs, instrumentals and field recordings, all posted here.

Then Ovi sidled away from hosting MP3s and anything afterward has been posted on Soundcloud, or Box, or DivShare or archive.com.

But for almost three years after, up until this past 30 May or so, every MP3 posted to Twango/Ovi continued to he hosted there. Nearly five years: not bad for the interwebs.

So an upraised glass to the ghosts of Twango and Ovi Share. Thanks.

And you'll see maybe more than a few of these empty white spaces where an Ovi embed used to be.



Perhaps fewer as time goes on.



Each a spot to spill a glass in memory of all that doesn't last.

the great Ovi to Box migration seems complete

Soon to be dead Ovi Share embeds remain, but now have new Box embeds to hold up when Ovi Share goes down for good.

This is a sleepy blog now, with most of the current action going on the so-called annex on Tumblr.  Not sure when or if I'll reup the dead links. 

Given the odd environment online re hosting, audio sharity and whatnot--wherein whole domains get nuked whether or not files are indeed posted by their creators/copyright holders (um, any nosey visitors dropping by--this is my stuff I'm posting), it gives one pause.  The so-called cloud seems a noxious gas.

If I do reup, I'll try to simply replace old links/embeds with new, and leave the posts are they are but without pesky dead links.  And if so, I'll announce it's having been done.  Till then . . .

Some famous art dude wanted to have a robot likeness of himself to attend art openings in his stead. Some of us remaining humans wonder if passing the Turing Test is really a slam dunk. Or a thing desired in times to come.

While no one's making more real estate, virtual space has been building out and more or less improving. What was spring reverb is surplanted by digital reverbs which are obviated by software versions of all the above. A commonly available entry-level home studio software contained as it were the amp and the ambiance heard herein. Even this low rent bit of Any'verb USA sounds kinda cool.

Kinda what it says. A spare speaker from an venerable Silvertone portable hi-fi joins a small stereo pair of speakers from my wife's old Realistic record player. As percussion/microphones. And in the case of the Realistics, as feedback microphones.

The transformative powers of both the Smokey Amp and the cheep no-name karaoke machines are invoked. Singing thru the Dora the Exp. Karaoke Cassette Player. Rhythmic feedback from the same. Ebowed beatup acoustic.

Optigan drums as well as organ are in there. Home organ bass pedal, glockenspiel, feedback, sludgy distorted guitar, two melodicas, sleigh bells, egg shakers. Not quite enough, right? The Yamaha VSS-30 sampler will help . . .

Features slide guitar feedback on an electrified beater acoustic guitar (named "Dylan" by its former owners evidently because it was distributed by a company based in Beverly Hills CA), Salvation Army glockenspiel, kalimba, bass, and wood percussion.

A songlike waltz featuring electric guitar, glockenspiel, bass, melodica, toy echo feedback, vocals. Initially recorded back in '07, mixed recently.

Features a few cymbals, each used in a feedback loop with a contact mic and a small battery powered amp. Plus feedback from a Realistic Electronic Reverb and ebowed violin drone.

Recorded months ago, finally mixed down in a year-end press to make things count, as it were.

Some cheating here, with whatever software tremelos could be had and a pitched-down doppleganger track or two to bring the warm (if not the low).

Otherwise just garden variety mic feedback/amplification with the cheep karaoke machine, its aliasing echo, some ebowed gitbox lost in hazy recollection. Plus the on-the-fly pitch shift quiver of the Ohio Art DynaMike voice changer.

Regarding the title, more haze within tethered to an actual place name.

Features Yamaha VSS-30 via a trem/'verbing Twin Reverb and the pervasive karaoke machine. Ebowed to varying degrees of squeeeness is the zitherish Music Maker, an old acoustic and a clunky homebrew zither of sorts cobbled together years ago. The clunky zither of sorts is also plucked, picked.

Foregoing the ritual mention of influences in this garage manifestation.

As it is with children, it seems bad form to have favorite songs, much less to profess them. Every song or instrumental created has its value, its own identity.

But from terms of ego & striving, some things work out more the way you wanted. And better still, some things surprise you to the point of rising above one's abilities or intentions. The fact that you made them (and may've even made them with noticeable flaws) can't stop them from joining in the mystery of the world at large. And leaving you feeling more humble than proud.

I like being surprised that way.

These songs surprise me, as do some of these others (Be Here Soon, Deep and Drifting come to mind). All of them surprise me here and there, but my faves surprise me most.

Without positing or denying some metaphysical substrate, I see mystery in the world as it exists. And it's nice occasionally to add to that mystery and not simply observe it.
